Simultaneous Acquisition.
Simultaneous acquisition refers to learning two languages from birth. This phenomenon is also referred to as simultaneous infant bilingualism. Children who acquire more than one language simultaneously during the first few years of life are generally treated as a specialist topic separate from the typical focus of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research.
Sequential Acquisition
Sequential acquisition is defined broadly as the learning of any language other than the first language (L1), provided the learning takes place some time later than the acquisition of the first language. This is also known as Second Language Learning (SLL). Individuals engaging in sequential acquisition may be learning their second, third, fourth, or even fifth language. Sequential acquisition may occur formally in a classroom setting, or informally through social contact, work, or migration.
